Malaysian Employment Pass also known as EP is a working permit or a working visa that allow the people from other nation and expatriates to work in Malaysia. This work pass provides the holder with an employment contract which is valid for 60 months.

There are three types of Malaysian Employment Passes. They are:

1. Employment Pass (Category I)
2. Employment Pass (Category II)
3. Employment Pass (Category III)

A number of agencies like the Ministry of Home Affairs, Malaysia Investment Development Authority, Securities Commission and so are involved in the issue, regulation and monitoring the Malaysian Employment Pass.



Requirements To Apply For The Malaysian Employment Pass

There are certain requirements that one must meet to obtain the Malaysian Employment Pass. The requirements vary according to the category of the pass one applies for.

The Employment Pass (Category I)

The Employment Pass (Category I) is for the expatriates who wish to work in Malaysia. They need to have confirmation about their appointment in any job that will pay them a monthly salary of MYR 10,000 or above.

Employment Pass (Category II)

For the Employment Pass (Category II) the applicant must have a document to state that he/she shall be obtaining a basic monthly salary of MYR 5,000 to MYR 9,999.99.

Employment Pass (Category III)

The Employment Pass (Category III) is for the skilled manpower. They need prior approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs and also need to state the documents that support them to prove that they will be earning between MYR 3,000 to MYR 4,999.99 every month.

The first two categories can request for the renewal of their passes after the end of validity of their passes as many times they wish. However, people bearing the third category employment passes can renew the passes only twice.

Eligibility Criteria and Features

1. Employment Pass (Category I)

Eligibility:
A document issued by the agency that clearly states the required salary.

Features:
1. Salary equivalent to MYR 10,000 or above monthly
2. Validity for 5 years
3. Can bring dependents into the country

2. Employment Pass (Category II)

Eligibility:

A document issued by the agency that clearly states the required salary.

Features:
1. Salary equivalent to MYR 5,000 to MYR 9,999 every month
2. Validity for 2 years
3. Can bring dependents into the country

3. Employment Pass (Category III)

Eligibility:
A document issued by the agency that clearly states the required salary.

Features:
1. Salary equivalent to MYR 3,000 to MYR 4,999 every month
2. Validity for 1 year

There are two more types of passes that the Malaysian government offers. They are:

1. Dependent Pass:

This pass allows the workers to bring their children who are under 18 years of age, their spouse, their parent, their parents-in-law and any adopted child who does not exceed the age of 18 years. The adult members who bear this pass are not allowed to work in the country until they convert their pass to the Employment Pass.

2. Social Visit Pass:

This pass allows the person to bring a person from a different nation to Malaysia for a short-term. People generally use this pass if they need to hire a made from another nation.
